Examine first data set

Brianna Silva

Due: 2/9/22 | Submitted: 3/16/22

Each year, the City of Boston's Employee Earnings Report shares a complete list of employee earnings an act of transparency and accountability.

The report does not specify what year this data covers, but it is most likely referring to 2021, since the report is published annually and there would not be enough data to collect for 2022. It also does not clearly state why and how it uses this data, but as it is referring to public employees, the information is therefore public and should be made public for citizens. This could, again, be a way to maintain transparency with the public and hold itself accountable for instances of misconduct.

The data listed in this report is collected and published by the city's Office of Human Resources. While department's webpage doesn't provide specific people to contact, it does provide a general email and phone number. One could also search within the report for Human Resources to find specific names to then search for and contact at a different time.

Questions:

  • What does RETRO mean?

  • What does QUINN_EDUCATION_INCENTIVE mean?

  • Are there any employees and/or departments that are exempt from having their earnings published? Why or why not?

  • How is the data corrected if a mistake is discovered after publishing?

People to interview:

  1. Human Resources or administrators in Boston public schools

  2. The Office of Human Resources for the City of Boston

  3. Employees from the Department of Innovation and Technology
